MATT Bloomfield has won promotion with Wycombe Wanderers before – but doesn’t want to go through the same experience as before.

The long-serving midfielder came on as a late substitute in the final game of the 2008-09 promotion-winning season in the game against Notts County that sealed their fate.

But Blues lost that game 2-1 thanks to an 89th minute goal – leading to shredded nerves and bitten fingernails amongst the Wanderers team, staff and fans.

And Bloomfield says he never wants to go through that ever again and wants an easy Wanderers win against Southend United to settle the nerves.

He said: “That was horrible. It was the longest few minutes of my life, sitting there waiting. Bury hit the post in injury time as well, it was horrible. Hopefully we won’t have to go through that.

“We need to attack the game like we have done in all the games this year. We haven’t always got the results we wanted but more often than not we’ve approached the game in the right way and if we do that on Saturday we can secure a win and won’t have to rely on results elsewhere.”

Bloomfield, who made his 250th appearance for Wanderers in Saturday’s win at Bury, said knowing his side need a win could work to their advantage however.

He said: “It can help in our favour. Last time we only needed a point and I think that can give you a false sense of security. This time we need to win the game and we are focused on that.

“There will have to be a difference [from two seasons ago] because we need to win the game. Last time we nearly messed it up and we need to make sure that doesn’t happen again.”

Comparing the current crop of players and the class of 2009 the midfielder said: “I think there’s some differences but there’s quite a few similarities. The togetherness and the team spirit is one thing – we had a good dressing room then and we’ve got an equally, if not better, dressing room now. That’s a key component of any successful team.

“We’ve got a lot of lads in that dressing room who’ve won promotion out of this league and I think that experience is key.”

Saturday’s win at Bury keeps destiny in Wycombe’s hands but Bloomfield said they need to build on that result if they want promotion.

He said: “Everyone was buzzing after the game but equally there was a sense of knowing the job wasn’t done. It was a massive result but if we don’t win this weekend it’ll be wasted.

“There’s an air of anticipation looking forward to Saturday, to get on with it and finish the job off.”
