BEACONSFIELD RFC can get one hand on the Southern Counties North title in the next fortnight – although they’ll be the last people to admit it.
A thumping 58-8 win over Tadley last weekend restored the swagger to the team just as they embark on a mini-sequence of games that will probably determine the league winners.
Tomorrow they go to second-placed Grove before entertaining third-placed Wootton Bassett the following weekend.
If they win both matches, even the ever-cautious head coach Allan Greene would have to admit privately it would take a collapse to lose it from there.
He said: “We’ve got ourselves in a good position, but the next two weeks will define where we really are.
“But let’s get Grove out of the way first and let’s get Wootton Bassett out of the way first before we start looking at the permutations.
“Windsor are still champing at the bit and Milton Keynes have only lost one more game than us.”
And beating both Grove and Wootton Bassett would be some achievement even after last Saturday’s eight-try roll over Tadley.
Greene said: “I was looking for a reaction and the guys that didn’t turn up at Milton Keynes did turn up against Tadley.
“I know Tadley weren’t up to much, but you can only play what’s in front of you and the guys played for 80 minutes.
“Eight tries is a good return and that performance has drawn a line underneath the Milton Keynes game.”
James Turner, James Caldwell, Callum Wilkinson, Gerry Goss, Johnny Hughes, Luke Wattam, Matt Morgan and Josh Rankin all touched down in the one-sided win.
Greene said: “That was their biggest defeat of the season. It does help playing at home though, and now I want to see the reaction at Grove.”
