CHARLIE Davies admits that signing a new two-year deal at Wasps could be a gamble, but says he believes the club could have a star-studded future.
The 21-year-old penned a new deal last month, the same time as Tom Lindsay, despite the club being up for sale.
He said: “It wasn’t a difficult decision. I always wanted to get a new deal here. I love the guys and I love the new coaching staff.
“You could say I was taking a gamble, but you look at the brand of Wasps and I think this club is always going to be around.
“I spoke it over with my agent, but I think the club will grow and progress.”
Davies’ confidence is founded on the wealth of young talent on the cusp of the first team.
He said: “It’s very important to keep us all together.
“You want to build a team with the same sort of ethics at a club and keeping the same guys together is only going to help.
“You don’t know what’s going to happen, but if we can keep the guys together and we keep progressing you don’t know what Wasps can achieve in the next few years.
“There is so much potential though, it’s exciting to think what the club might be able to do in a few years.”
Davies got a real taste for it against Exeter last weekend, when he led the team out for the first time in his career.
He said: “I saw it on the team-sheet, no one said anything to me.
“It was a bit daunting but I really enjoyed it, it was a great accolade.
“I think I’m one of the youngest ever Wasps captains and I was really proud of it.
“As a young player coming through school at my old club I was always captain.
“The last time I was captain was at age group county, so I have captained before but obviously not at this level.
“It’s something I’m quite comfortable doing if they want me to. If I get the opportunity again I’ll take the opportunity gladly.”
