Bucks drivers celebrate a weekend to remember with four from four

TWO Bucks drivers are walking on air today after claiming four wins from four starts at the weekend to ignite their respective championship challenges.

At 18 and 64 years old, Tom Ingram and Marcus Bicknell are at opposite ends of their careers.

But while teenager Ingram is one of the hottest young drivers around and chasing a hat-trick of Ginetta titles, Bicknell’s victories were more of a surprise.

The Chalfont St Giles pensioner only took up motor-racing after his wife Susie bought him a track day at Brands Hatch for his 50th birthday.

He’s been racing in the Clubmans Cup ever since but nothing had prepared him for Sunday’s success.

He said: “In the previous four races [this season], we had three retirements and a fourth place. But it all came together on Sunday.

“It’s not Lewis Hamilton stuff, it’s more about fun, but if you get the results as well it’s fantastic. We’ve had problems with the suspension, the clutch, the engine mis-firing, the wheels... there have been 150 man-hours spent on the car so it’s nice to see the hard-work rewarded.”

Incredibly, Bicknell is not the oldest driver on the grid. Three-time champion Barry Webb from Sutton Coldfield is 66.

Bicknell said: “There is a nice blend there, and even some ladies. But the young whipper-snappers don’t like losing to us distinguished silver-haired gentlemen.

“They think they have a divine right to be on the podium but it’s not always the case and adding up the figures I think I’m leading the championship now.”

Ingram meanwhile, still has a lot of work to do to continue his championship-winning run.

He still has 90 points to make up on the overall leaders despite his phenomenal double in the Ginetta GT Supercup at Oulton Park.

He said: “It was just a perfect weekend – definitely one of the best of my career so far – but there’s a long way to go yet in the championship, and maintaining our consistency will be paramount.

“We’re still on the back foot points-wise, so we need to keep chipping away, keep the pressure up and get the best result we can every single time we take to the circuit.”

Ingram’s next race is at Croft on June 23/24, while Bicknell returns to the grid in five weeks time at Oulton Park.
