BARRY Hayles scored twice on his Chesham debut as the Generals beat Berkhamsted last night.

After scoring 36 goals over the last two seasons for Conference South side Truro City, the former Premiership striker has signed for Andy Leese's men.

Now 40, the ex-Fulham man was straight into the action by notching a double as Chesham won 3-1.

He forms one half of a potentially prolific partnership for the Generals next season, with Leese also securing the signature of Windsor striker Michael Chennells.

The 26-year-old scored 22 times in 25 matches for Keith Scott's men last season and Leese hopes his two new signings will boost Chesham's promotion chances.

He said: "One area we needed to improve on from last year is the amount of goals we score. We did not get enough as a team overall, and it affected us at critical times of the season."

Referring to Chennells, who has scored in all three of Chesham’s friendlies so far, Leese said: "Mike is a player we have tried to sign before, and he has the quality and the winning mentality we need to push on.

"He has settled quickly as he knows a number of our players. He offers a proven goalscoring touch which we need in this league, and his record suggests he will be amongst the goals."

Chesham's next friendly is this Saturday as the Generals host an Arsenal XI at The Meadow.
