Waddock wants to see more from players

GARY Waddock wants his players to improve their performances as Blues’ pre-season schedule draws to an end.

The Wanderers manager has so far maintained his team’s friendlies are simply fitness exercises but he’s now challenging his players to up their game ahead of the big kick-off.

They face one final pre-season test at home to Brentford before facing Watford in the first round of the League Cup next Saturday, and Waddock wants his players to start performing ahead of their showdown with the Hornets.

He was unhappy with some aspects of his side’s play as they overcame Conference side Cambridge United 3-2 at The Abbey this afternoon.

Waddock said: “It’s pleasing from the striker’s point of view but we conceded one from a penalty and there was a sloppy second goal.

“There were one or two pleasing bits from our play but there’s room for improvement as well.”

The Blues boss added: “Fitness is the number one but you want players to start hitting form. Today, this was another good test for us away from home. We want the players to start putting in performances as well.

“It’s still early – we are going into the start of competitive games and you don’t want to possibly peak too early.”
