RACHEL Cawthorn finished less than half a second out of the medals in the Canoe Sprint K1 500m final at Dorney Lake this morning.
The 23-year-old from Marlow won her heat and then came second in her semi-final, but she was unable to turn around a disappointing Games so far for the sprinters.
She made a fast start and was among the leaders early on, but Hungarian powerhouse Danuta Kozak began to pull away and Cawthorn quickly slipped back through the field.
However, she stormed back in the final 100m and was still closing the gap when she crossed the line just 0.422 seconds behind South African Bridgitte Hartley in the bronze medal position.
Ukrainian Inna Osypenko-Radomska was second with Kozak taking the gold by nearly a second.
It’s not all over for our kayakers though.
Flackwell Heath’s Jess Walker has one more chance at Olympic gold this weekend.
She goes in the the heats of the Canoe Sprint K1 tomorrow. The final is on Saturday.
