Waddock delighted after opening day win Waddock delighted after opening day win

WYCOMBE Wanderers boss Gary Waddock believes his team are on the right road to eradicating the defensive woes of last season following today's 3-1 victory at York City.

The Chairboys, who stormed into a 3-0 lead at Bootham Crescent, conceded a 54th-minute Jason Walker goal that looked like it should have been ruled out by an offside flag in the League Two curtain raiser.

And, with Chris Iwelumo's extra-time effort, proving the only difference between Waddock's men and Championship neighbours Watford last weekend, the Adams Park chief feels the sorry days that saw a century of goals shipped during the 2011/12 campaign have now been left behind.

After watching his team take maximum points thanks to goals from Matt Bloomfield, Sam Wood and Stuart Beavon, Waddock said: "The whole group of players have worked extremely hard since the disappointment of last season, especially on the defensive side of things.

"We scored enough last season but the problem was obviously keeping them out.

"We've tried to address that in pre-season and, whilst I'm a bit disappointed with their goal because Woody went to ground to let their player deliver the cross, if that's the only negative I will take that.

"I was pleased with that performance against a decent side who have just been promoted so the momentum was with them, considering the season they have just had.

"There was a big crowd as well so I am delighted that we handled all that. I wanted to get off to a positive start and we have done that at a difficult place to come."

What apity just heard Paul Hayes signed for Brentfrod today (20th) on a free transfer. Would have been great if Wycombe had got him.
