Rovers chairman questions decision to abandon Blues clash Rovers chairman questions decision to abandon Blues clash

BRISTOL Rovers chairman Nick Higgs has hit out at the decision to abandon Saturday’s match with Wycombe Wanderers - calling the ruling “strange”.

The Pirates were 3-1 up at Adams Park when the game was called off due to health and safety concerns after the stand housing the visiting fans was struck by lightning during a torrential second-half downpour.

Wanderers said in a post-match statement that the stand's proximity to electricity pylons, along with flooding in the area, were key safety factors in calling off the match.

Rovers manager Mark McGhee felt the correct decision was made but his chairman has his doubts and fears the Pirates will be powerless to prevent the fixture from being replayed.

He said: "It is rather strange the game was abandoned for health and safety reasons because of fears that fans or players could be struck by lightning, yet supporters were kept in the stand for almost 30 minutes after the game was stopped.

"We are to sit down and discuss the issue, but the likelihood is we won't be able to change the result and that we won't be taking any further action at this stage, even though the whole thing doesn't sit very comfortably with me at all."

A date for the rearranged fixture will be announced in due course.

Safest place for the supporters was in the stand, not splashing about in the puddles outside and near the electricity pylon. The safest place for the players was inside, not running around on a (very) wet pitch. Good call by the WWFC H&S guy to keep supporters in the stand. Maybe they could have re-started the game after , say, a half hour break, but hey it was a tough call to make. With the benefit of hindsight maybe the game could have continued, but to seriously suggest that WWFC deliberately got this game called off because they were losing is frankly ridiculous. It was only third game of the season for heavens sake.

So Mr Higgs , would you have been happy wandering around in the wet in the eye of an electric storm, or did you stay safely indoors ?

As you say "Numpty"

It's a good job Mr Higgs isn't a safety officer. The stand acted as a Faraday Cage, directing the lightning charge safely to earth. The Bristol Rovers fans were safer there rather than outside the stand, which was directly next to a far taller pylon with high voltage cables suspended from it.
Quite frankly these are embarrassingly ill-informed, uneducated and libellous comments to be coming from a club official.

If Mr.Higgs wants to do something senseible about the situation I would suggest he gets his own house in order by sorting out hte so called supporters from his club who decided to make trouble at the end of the game. Not the first time the "Gas Army" have caused trouble at Wycombe !!!
