Wycombe RFC: Progress is being made

NEW High Wycombe RFC coach Dave Roberts is remaining philosophical after his team lost heavily for the second week in a row.

They were beaten 36-7 on their home soil by Windsor to follow up a 62-6 defeat in Swindon on the opening day of the season.

But Roberts, who took over from Paul Gaster in the summer, said: “We’re a work in progress, but progress is being made.

“Certainly up front there was a huge improvement and we secured much more of our own ball at the line-out and in the scrum.

“We focused on the set piece in training and that paid off.

“Defensively we were more organised too, although individually the tackling wasn’t where it needs to be.

“We still have areas to work on, the collision and the resulting contest for the ball, but I’m confident we will continue to make improvements as the season develops.”

A penalty and converted try put Wycombe on the back foot inside ten minutes, and it might have been even worse had Mark Childerhouse not saved his side with a try saving tackle.

It wasn’t until the 25th minute that Wycombe finally got possession in the Windsor half, but it didn’t result in points and after losing full back Dave Whiteaker they fell apart slightly.

By half time they were 24-0 behind and despite finding greater rhythm after the turnaround they never threatened to stage a comeback, with Joe Openshaw scoring their only try Roberts said: “I’ve been reminded that when Wycombe reached the play-offs they lost their first three games.

“We’re not panicking yet.”
