Wasps boss retains even keel

DAI Young is not one for exaggeration.

The Wasps director of rugby appeared to be calmest man in the room when the entire foundation of Wasps was rocking beneath him during a year of intense uncertainty, and he was playing it cool again after his team romped to a bonus point victory over London Irish just hours after life-saving take-over deal was announced.

Instead of being swept up by emotion, Young was phlegmatic.

He said: “I thought we deserved to win, but I thought the bonus point flattered us. I don't think we were that much better than Irish.

“The first half was pretty disappointing. I thought we were coming second in every aspect.

“Up front we struggled to get any platform. Defensively we were struggling in open play and in attack we failed to hold on to the ball for long enough periods to build any pressure and momentum.

“Certainly coming into half time the dressing room wasn't a happy place to be. Everyone realised we were going to struggle to win any game with that level of performance.

“We had to step up every department, but I think we did.

“In the second half we looked a completely different team. We were far more potent with the ball in hand, defensively we looked far stronger and the forwards stepped up in the scrum and line out.”
