Waddock not taking risks with injuries

INJURY and fatigue meant Gary Waddock wasn’t able to keep his potential matchwinners on the pitch as Blues went looking for more goals against Exeter.

Joel Grant, who has shown some sparkling form on the wing in recent matches, was removed with time running out at St James’ Park last night and goalscorer Gareth Ainsworth was also withdrawn during the 3-2 defeat.

Waddock revealed afterwards Grant had picked up a slight injury and, mindful of his side’s mounting injury problems, he was left with little option but to take him off.

He said: “His hamstring was a bit tight. I didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks.”

Ainsworth, who’s 40 next birthday, rolled back the years with a fine display on the opposite wing from Grant but wasn’t able to keep going for the full 90 minutes.

Waddock said: “If Gaz was a couple of years younger he’d have stayed on. The guy’s amazing to keep performing at that level and he’s got a goal tonight as well. He’s an example to the others.”
