Captain says players to blame for Chesham dip

CHESHAM United captain Danny Talbot says the players must take the blame for a run of result that has seen the club dumped out of The FA Cup and sink from joint top of the Southern League Premier Division to eighth.

After a storming start to the campaign, Chesham have hit the buffers with four defeats in their last five games.

A home cup defeat to Northwood was the second of those and has been quickly followed by league defeats to Gosport Borough, 3-0, and Arlesey Town, 2-0.

Talbot said: “As players we have to take full responsibility. We’ve let Andy [Leese, manager] and all the coaching staff down.

“They work hard for us and we’ve let them, the club and the fans down.”

The sudden downturn is even more unexpected after the team’s flying start.

Talbot said: “It’s got to be put down to complacency, individually and as a team. After the start we had maybe we thought we didn’t have to work as hard.

“We’ve stopped doing the things that were winning us games. We’re making bad mistakes, we’re not sticking to the strategy...

“We’re not applying ourselves as we should be and not making as many good decisions as we should be.

“We lost at Bideford so we can’t say we’ve suddenly gone on a bad run because of a cup exit.”

Despite Chesham’s sudden slump, they remain just five points off the lead with only eight games played.

Talbot said: “This is my sixth season here and this is the worst run of games since I’ve been here.

“We’ve got plenty of time, but we’ve got to change this run of results.

“We feel we’re one of the sides that can be at the right end of the table, but if this run continues we’ll give ourselves too much work to do.”

The Generals don’t play this weekend.
