Beaconsfield desperate to break the seal

YOU can’t get much closer than Beaconsfield RFC have this season without actually winning a game.

They were hammered on the opening day, but in the three matches since then their aggregate score is 65-73.

Incredibly, they have managed to squeeze three defeats out of that eight-point deficit and are now second from bottom of London 1 North.

Head coach Allan Greene said: “It’s crazy, but that’s rugby at the next level. I honestly think the first win is not too far away though.

“Whether it’s this weekend or not I don’t know, but we’re so close it can’t be long.”

On Saturday, Brentwood became the latest team to frustrate Beaconsfield after they withstood a stirring fightback to snatch the win 25-22 with a last-minute penalty.

Greene said: “If the game was 78 minutes we’d be fifth. But every time we come back we give it away again in the last knockings.

“Brentwood won with a kick that was about 37m and at an angle, against Ruislip a few weeks ago the kick was about 44m.

“They were both very tough kicks. But they got theirs and we hit a post on Saturday, we hit a post against Old Haberdashers...

“It’s these fine margins, but confidence is still there because we know we can compete at this level. We just need to get over the line so we can feel part of this league.”

Beaconsfield were 22-3 down early in the second half, but tries from Johnny Hughes, Alex Mair and Matt Morgan looked like salvaging it for Beaconsfield until more last-minute heartache.

Greene said: “I’ve got every confidence. We’ve got some great players here and I can’t wait for the next game.”

They go to Eton Manor next.
