Caretaker boss not discouraged by opening defeat

GARETH Ainsworth has insisted he still wants to be Wycombe Wanderers manager despite watching them lose 3-0 at Dagenham & Redbridge today.

Ainsworth is in temporary charge of the team after Gary Waddock was sacked a week ago.

He said: “The board know I want to be a manager one day and if it comes quicker than expected then it does.

“If it doesn't then I still want to be a manager one day. They know where I stand.

“But whether I'm caretaker manager or kit man, it doesn't matter. I still want to give 100 per cent for Wycombe to get the points and get this club back where it should be.”

Essentially, today and the next few weeks will be Ainsworth's interview.

He said: “I'd probably feel more pressure if I was manager. As caretaker, you just give your best and they'll judge you on that.

“That's fair enough. It's a results game and you get judged on results. We'll see what happens in the next week.”

It can only go upwards though, after this result.

Ainsworth said: “It was very tough. It was always going to be and the lads on the floor at the moment. It's not a nice place to be and we have to try and change this mentality and get winning again.

“But the result doesn't tell the whole tale. “A 3-0 loss at Dagenham is a hard one to take, but if you'd been at the game and seen the battling qualities of the team – that has definitely improved.”
