Young looking for the right blend

WASPS have the right ingredients to succeed this season but haven't managed to find the right blend yet, believes Dai Young.

The director of rugby was left delighted at his side's defending against table toppers Northampton on Friday night, but felt it was to the detriment of their attacking set-up.

That was in contrast to their season's curtain raiser against Harlequins, where a swashbuckling attacking showing that saw Wasps plunder five tries still ended in defeat.

Young says he's looking forward to the game where everything comes together - and he feels it's just around the corner after Wasps picked up bonus points against some of the Premiership's big guns.

He said: "When that happens, some team is going to cop a bad hiding. When we get everything right we are going to be a really good team.

"If you look back in all the games, we've shown glimpses in all the games how good we can be.

"We are not happy with any area. Every area is a work in progress at this moment in time and we are getting better with every game.

"We raised expectations at Twickenham. People didn't expect us to perform like that against Harlequins. What we said at the start of the year is still very true - we are a new team that's developing.

"At the start of the season not many people would have expected us to go to Bath, Gloucester or Northampton to win. It's not a case of we've underachieved, we've shown how good we can be. We've just got to keep working at it."

Reflecting on the Northampton loss, Young said: "We've had a problem with defending driving line outs this season - Northampton are the best and we controlled that really well. Defence was a big step up from where it's been in the first couple of weeks, apart from the kick chase lapse for the try.

"The scrum was good for 15 minutes until Brian Mujati came on. It was a different kettle of fish as they stepped up to a different level."

But he added: "Our attack didn't quite function like it can function."
