Wanderers get their vibe back thanks to Gaz

CAPTAIN for the night Danny Foster said Gareth Ainsworth's "infectious" personality has created a greater will to win amongst Wanderers players.

Foster said the caretaker manager's energy was a key reason behind an upturn in results and an improvement in performances since he took over from the sacked Gary Waddock.

The right back, who took possession of the captain's armband in Gary Doherty's absence against Portsmouth, said Ainsworth wasn't doing a lot different to Waddock on the training ground apart from demanding greater levels of desire.

But that's made all the difference, with Blues now unbeaten in three under Ainsworth after their shock win in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last night.

He said: "There's been a big push from everyone. Hats off to Gaz, he's got the boys working really hard and it's paying off.

"I don't think there's a main difference but he will have that minimum requirement. He's infectious - his energy and passion does spill over onto the boys. You can sense it in the dressing room, there's a good positive vibe and Gaz has a lot to do with that.

"Everyone knows he's full of passion. His energy has rubbed off on the boys in the last couple of games.

"The boys are all behind him. That togetherness, that team spirit, everyone in the dressing room - Gaz, Dobbo, all the staff included - all the staff are pushing in the same direction.

"A lot of the boys are working very hard in training. It's a squad game, we are all in it together and whoever plays on Saturday rolls their sleeves up and is willing to die for the cause."

Reflecting on the 3-1 win at Fratton Park, Foster said: "From minute one to minute 90 everyone's put in a great shift and it was a really good team performance.

"We're disappointed with the goal but our general play, I felt we defended really well. Tools [Anthony Stewart] and Dave [Winfield] have come into the side and they were outstanding. I'd like to give them a little mention, I really thought they were rock solid.

"We felt in our dressing room we could do enough to win this game if we set our stall out and played at the levels we can."

Foster was made Wanderers captain for the first time against Pompey and led them to a famous victory.

The 27-year-old said: "I found out literally just before we went out for the warm up. It was a nice surprise. I didn't see that coming. I was proud to lead the boys.

"It was a great result. I'll enjoy this tonight, it'll be one to remember."
