Sir William Borlase's flourish at National Schools Regatta

THE bigger the stage the better the performance.
That appears to be the case for Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School as they were singing in the rain after doubling their achievements at the National Schools Regatta in Nottingham last weekend.
Despite dreadful conditions, the Marlow school stormed to three golds, four silvers and a bronze medal to finish third overall against some of the best junior crews in the country.
Robin Dowell, director of rowing, said: “The squads produced remarkable results at the National Schools Regatta, setting a new bench mark for us as a school.
“We achieved great results across all the age groups with many of the boats just missing out on a medal.
“The juniors’ attention is now turned on some of the smaller summer events whilst the seniors’ focus is now on Henley Royal Regatta.”
Among the gold medal winners, the senior boys quad of Michael Tymofijiw, Jack Beaumont, Max Coussens and Tom Fantham won the Forest Cup, and they were matched by the senior girls crew of Emily Jenkins-Pandya, Alex Flynn, Gaby Halloran and Emily Ford in the coxless fours.
Not to be outdone, Rufus Biggs, Steve Wilson, Sam Harding, Alex Sloots, Tommy Gale, Rex Chen, Isaac Uden, Oliver Balgdon and Chris Lawrie were peerless in the winning the J15 eights.
Silver medals came from Chris Lawrie in the J15 single sculls, Georgia Mulraine and Rosie Street in the J15 girls double sculls, Max Coussens and Ben Cox in the double sculls and Matthew Tabor, Robert Kemp, Cameron Murray and Hugo Coussens in the J16 quad sculls.
Completing the medal haul, Megan Barry, Olivia Radcliffe, Rosie Street, Georgia Mulraine and Kelsey Stoddart as cox picked up bronze in the J15 girls coxed quad sculls. Sir William Borlase’s, like Great Marlow School, is one of the few state schools in the country offering rowing.
