NICKY Walker said he wants to grab the opportunity of first team football with both hands after his Rotherham United team mate Danny Rowe recommended Wanderers to him.

Winger Walker has joined Blues on loan until November 2 along with his Millers team mate Rowe, who also enjoyed a loan spell at Adams Park last season.

The double deal was announced by Wanderers last Thursday and Walker said he jumped at the opportunity of playing first team football.

The 19-year-old said: "A few days, maybe a week, before the assistant at Rotherham mentioned it. He said, 'We want you to play a few games'. I couldn't wait to get started when I heard about it.

"I wanted to get out on loan at the start of the season - that was my aim. League Two is the perfect opportunity for me.

"I've come with the intention to grab it with both hands, like Danny last season. He was really successful. It would be great if we can both do well and make a difference.

"I played a few games, mainly friendlies against lower league teams. I wanted to better myself and I wanted an opportunity like this."

He said there were no doubts about signing after Rowe said Adams Park is the place to be.

Walker said: "The week it got mentioned he was speaking to me about it a lot after training. They're the same group of lads he knew from here last year. They're really good lads and he said you'll enjoy it."

Walker, who's made three professional appearances for Rotherham so far, was given his first run-out for Wanderers during Saturday's friendly win at Barnet.

He said: "The gaffer told me I did well, I did what he wanted me to do.

"I found I needed to get used to the style of play a bit more - that'll come with games. I need to find how to make a difference. I did some good things but I was getting slightly frustrated - I wanted to get on the ball more."

Walker was given a starting berth on the right wing but showed his full repertoire by supplying a pinpoint cross with his left foot that Aaron Pierre headed inches wide in the first half.

He said: "I can play either, left or right. I have played up front or behind the strikers, but I don't want to change formation for the gaffer. If he's trying to accommodate me I'll be happy wherever.

"I'm quite a pacy player. I never stop working and like to get at defenders, and try to make a difference by scoring a goal or getting an assist - something that can change a game.

"I can't wait for the season to start now."
