GARETH Ainsworth said his Wanderers team can keep on improving if they stick to the recipe for success that’s brought them three wins out of four.

Blues ground out the hardest-fought of that trio of victories at Stevenage this afternoon, as they battled back from a goal down to beat their hosts.

Wanderers were expecting a physical war of attrition at the Lamex Stadium and they duly got one – as summed up by the opening goal, with Darius Charles putting Boro in front after leaving goalkeeper Matt Ingram needing medical attention with a crunching tackle before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Paul Hayes, with a wonderful volley, and Peter Murphy, taking advantage of a clever free kick routine, put Wanderers in front by half time before Matt McClure wrapped it up as the game entered injury time.

Ainsworth said it was nothing less than Blues deserved, saying his team controlled the first half despite falling behind.

He said: “They [Stevenage] are going to be physical - they get results here, they’ve got promotions here. Graham [Westley, manager] plays the way he does, and respect to him for sticking to his philosophy. We knew what was coming.

“We stood up to everything they chucked at us. Not many people will have seen that coming.

“Going down after a defeat at home, and the goal could have been a little bit unjust, the reaction epitomises how far we’ve come.

“I can see us getting better and better and stronger and stronger. As long as everyone keeps their feet on the ground, does the right thing and the effort and togetherness stays, that’s my job done.

“The big thing for me is losing 2-0 in midweek to Tranmere and getting back on track today – whether it’s a big win or a slim win, getting back on track was what I wanted to do. They have done a really good professional job today and I couldn’t be happier.”

Ainsworth added: “There was only one team in it first half, even though they went 1-0 up. Prior to that challenge there was only team in the game. We controlled the game, we got many crosses into their box, got chances, corners. Maybe it sparked them into being a bit more clinical.

“That goal was something special from Hayesy and gave us the belief we could go on and win the game.”
