GARETH Ainsworth has refused to rule out the possibility of Anthony Stewart coming back to Adams Park after Danny Rowe was recalled from his loan.

Rowe was recalled early from his second loan spell with Wanderers last Thursday by his parent club Rotherham, who needed him for their Championship match two days later.

It left Ainsworth short on defenders and potentially opens the door for Stewart to make a surprise return.

The 22-year-old is in contract limbo as Wanderers retain his registration because of his age, but he is technically a free agent after so far refusing to sign the new deal he was offered at the end of last season.

The Bucks Free Press understands Stewart has been training with League One Crawley Town, the team he made three friendly appearances for as a trialist over the summer.

Ainsworth refused to be drawn on the player's future but didn't rule out the possibility of him making a return to Wanderers.

The Blues boss said: "The Anthony Stewart saga continues. At the moment he's not playing anywhere but I'm sure he will pop up somewhere."

Asked if he could make a comeback, Ainsworth said: "The less comment I make, the better - I can't comment on that."

It's likely however Rowe will be allowed to return to Wanderers sooner rather than later after Rotherham boss Steve Evans said he will be going back out on loan once his squad's defensive injury headaches have been cured.

The Scotsman said: "He won't be going anywhere else - if he goes back out the door then it will only be back to Gareth Ainsworth at Wycombe."

Ainsworth said: "It's a really big compliment from a team like Rotherham and a manager like Steve Evans.

"I think he realises what we do at Wycombe. We get young players in, we get them out of the U21s league - which I have issues with regarding getting players ready for football - we get them in at 18 or 19 years old and we give them games.

"The bigger clubs reap the rewards when they go back because they have come on leaps and bounds. That's one of the things Steve's seen.

"Danny will feature in his team before long and hopefully we'll play a big part in getting him ready for that."
