Gareth Ainsworth believes tomorrow's opponents York City have benefitted from his opposite number Russ Wilcox being made the victim of a kneejerk reaction by Scunthorpe United.

Wilcox led the Iron to promotion from League Two last season, setting a Football League record for the longest unbeaten run for a new manager as United failed to lose any of his first 28 games in charge.

He was sacked after losing eight of his first 11 matches at a higher level, before being appointed York manager a week later following Nigel Worthington's resignation.

Ainsworth believes the Minstermen could go on a similar run under Wilcox as they did with Worthington last year, with a 17 match unbeaten streak sealing a play off spot after being in the relegation zone.

City currently sit five points above the bottom two but are unbeaten in six on the road in League Two.

Ainsworth said: "They have got a good manager. He broke records last year with Scunthorpe - in my opinion he was the victim of a kneejerk reaction going up to the next level.

"Time will tell on that one, whether that was the right decision, but I think in League Two he's a good manager.

"He knows how to get results. It's taken him slightly longer than he would have hoped to start turning things round, but they have turned things round and they will be a tough game."

The Wanderers boss is optimistic injured trio Matt McClure, Hogan Ephraim and Max Kretzschmar will be able to feature in his squad.
