Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth admitted he was worried his side might slip up against York after a fractious build-up to the game that left him without top scorer Paul Hayes.

The talismanic striker played through a calf strain against Hartlepool last week but he wasn’t able to feature against the Minstermen.

Ainsworth said he had a bad feeling heading into yesterday’s fixture off the back of Hayes’ injury, some of his other players trying and failing to overcome minor niggles, a change in midfield with Stuart Lewis departing and Marcus Bean arriving, and not being able to train as normal on Thursday.

Torrential rain left their training ground waterlogged so the team decamped to the all weather surface at Bisham Abbey.

The Blues boss said: “The absence of Paul Hayes today was a bit of a worry. When he’s not scoring, he’s creating fantastic opportunities for everyone else.

“He’s been going through the pain barrier for us. I’d rather lose Paul for one or two games than for six or seven.

“If I’m honest, before the game I was a little bit apprehensive about how this would go. We carried a couple of knocks, there’s been a couple of ins and outs this week, and that does put an uncertainty into the squad.

“We couldn’t train on the training ground on Thursday – all these things just mount up and you think, is this the week? To win after the week we had is a fantastic feeling.

“I thought this could be the slip up.”
