Wanderers stalwart Matt Bloomfield said the pitch at Bury was one of the worst he's ever played on.

The long serving midfielder has seen it all during more than a decade with the Blues but said the Gigg Lane surface was up there with the worst he'd ever encountered.

Bloomfield said the only comparable pitch he'd played on was during a 6-0 thrashing at Stockport back in 2007 on a quagmire.

Snow had settled on the pitch at Bury before kick off, and some of the white stuff remained on the playing surface for the whole of Saturday's match.

It thawed in other patches, making the pitch waterlogged and leaving the players of both sides slipping and sliding all over the place.

Bury boss David Flitcroft said the match "didn't represent football" and was one of the ugliest he'd ever seen, meaning it was to the players' credit they managed to play out a competitive 1-1 draw.

Bloomfield said: "The only one I can compare it with was the day we went to Stockport. That was just as bad today - it was tough. It made it hard for all the players and for the ref to referee it.

"When we got here at about 1.15pm I was very surprised it was quite as wet as it was. The ball wasn't running true but the ref seemed like he wanted to get it on.

"We've come all this way up here and we wanted to play. It was fine by us and we gave it everything we've got.

"On that pitch, against a team like Bury, it was definitely a good result for us.

"For the first 20 minutes we didn't adapt very well. They started better than us. After that we really got into our stride and played the conditions well. The front three looked dangerous all afternoon."
