Joe Jacobson believes Wanderers are top of League Two because they can do the ugly side of the game as well as anyone in the division.

Wycombe’s battling qualities were at the fore on Saturday as they repelled everything Mansfield threw at them over the course of a testing 90 minutes which eventually finished goalless.

The left-back admits that while Blues prefer to get the ball down and play their willingness to fight and battle when the game turns scrappy separates them from the rest.

He said: “We like to play our football, we like to get the ball down and sometimes you can’t do that. For us, luckily, we’ve got a good squad of players who are willing to battle and we can do the ugly side of it as well as anyone else in the league.

“I think that’s why we are where we are in the league because we’ll fight for each other, fight right until the end and never give up on anything.

“When it comes to a battle we’ll give as good as we get. Hopefully when we’re at home next weekend we can put up a performance which warrants a good victory for us.”

Wanderers clambered back onto the team bus at the One Call Stadium on Saturday evening knowing they had been in a game against a side that are just two points above the relegation zone.

The point gained against the Stags added to the Chairboy’s unbeaten run which now stands at ten league games, and Jacobson feels they will only get better as they welcome injured players back into the fold in the coming weeks.

“If you look on paper two or three of our best players are not in the starting line-up,” said Jacobson. “It shows how good everyone is playing at the moment and how good the squad that the manager’s managed to get together is.

“We’ve got players like Matt McClure and Hogan coming on. Hogan’s played in the Premier League so the quality he brings that we see in training is unbelievable and if we can get him match fit then he’s going to be a big threat in this league.

“Matty’s done it before, he was unfortunate on Saturday but he works hard for his chances. Things are looking good but we can’t rest on our laurels and we’ll look at it like we haven’t won for two games and make sure we turn that around and get a victory on Saturday.”
