Wanderers stalwart Matt Bloomfield believes promotion to League One this season would rank as the best achievement of his 11 years wearing the dark and light blue quarters.

The midfielder has been part of two Blues teams in years gone by that have finished third in English football’s fourth tier in both 2009 and 2011.

Once again Wycombe find themselves in the hunt for automatic promotion – sitting third with 14 games to play – although, unlike in the aforementioned campaigns when the club were considered to be among the favourites to go up, this time not even Bloomfield expected them to mount a challenge for a top three spot.

He said: “I think it would stand up there with any of them (previous promotions). Considering what we went through last year to actually stay in the league was as big of an achievement as we’ve achieved this season.

“Because of the other bits and pieces that were going on to stay in the league was an achievement in itself.

“If we could achieve it this year it would be as big of an achievement as we’ve had at my time during the club because of the financial restraints and how we’ve turned it around from last season.”

Bloomfield put in a man-of-the-match display against Carlisle on Saturday to help get Blues’ promotion push back on track, and extend their unbeaten run on their travels to nine matches.

Their form on the road drew favourable comparisons from the 31-year-old to the season in which they lost just five away matches under the stewardship of Gareth Ainsworth’s predecessor in 2010/11.

“I remember a few years ago we seemed to have a pretty good record on the road and I think it was the year that we got promoted under Gary actually. We went on the road and won quite a few games,” he explained.

“Once you get the confidence of getting a few results you go into games believing that you can win them and that always helps. It’s a good away record but we’re also very proud of playing games at home and we want to pick up points at home as well.”

While the midfielder stressed there is a long way to go before the current crop of Wanderers can look forward to playing League One football, he does feel that the squad assembled by Ainsworth and his assistant Richard Dobson is comparable to the best during his career at Adams Park.

He said: “I think this team compares very well to some of the teams I’ve played in previously. We’ve got a team full of ability. There are young enthusiastic players in there, and there’s older heads who are a little bit wiser and who’ve seen a few more games as well so there’s a nice blend.

“The gaffer and Dobbo, in the summer, really did put together a well balanced squad and I think that’s been shown throughout the season.

“There’s a lot of hunger in there as well because some of those boys haven’t got promotions before, and some of those boys want to achieve a lot of things in their career which stands them in good stead. That hunger and desire will drive us on. I think this is a very good team and compares to any of the ones I’ve played in.”
