Sam Saunders is relishing the chance to aid Wanderers’ promotion push after signing on loan from Championship side Brentford.

The midfielder was in his Bees club tracksuit and ready to travel up to Birmingham with Mark Warburton’s first team squad when he was offered the chance to sign for Blues on a one-month loan deal along with team mate Nico Yennaris.

Saunders was thrown straight into the starting line-up by Gareth Ainsworth against Stevenage on Saturday – his first competitive start since 11 January 2014 when he picked up a knee injury against Port Vale.

He said: “I spoke to the gaffer (Mark Warburton) and said I need to go and get some games of football as I was missing it too much.

“He was very helpful he spoke to a few clubs, and then on Friday two or three of them came in and in the circumstances I decided to come to Wycombe.

“I felt it was a team that was pushing for promotion, I know a lot of the lads and I know they’re a good bunch of honest lads who work really hard for each other. I spoke to Gareth and he said he was keen for me to come down.”

The 31-year-old arrives at Adams Park with great pedigree having helped Brentford to the League One play-off final two seasons ago before making 22 appearances as the Bees earned promotion to the Championship in the last campaign.

Since returning from injury Saunders has made seven substitute appearances for Warburton’s team, but he was keen to be a regular starter once again.

“I felt I needed games, I felt I needed to play just for a bit of sanity,” he explained.

“It’s frustrating when you’re injured and not playing, but then when you’re fit and not playing it’s a different kind of frustration. He understood that I needed to go and get some games.

“I’m just grateful to come down here to such a good club like Wycombe, a team that’s pushing for something and hopefully I’ll help them get the promotion.”

Both Saunders and Yennaris slotted seamlessly in to a team that dominated for large period’s of Saturday’s 2-2 draw.

The ex-Dagenham and Redbridge ace played the full 90 minutes and rated is performance as “OK” and believes he will improve with each game that he plays in a Wanderers shirt.

He said: “It wasn’t a classic or one for the neutral, but it was good to be out there and playing for three points and it was unfortunate we couldn’t get them in the end.

“It was just great to have that three o'clock buzz again, which is something that I’ve missed. I’ve watched enough Jeff Stelling, I’ve watched enough football from the bench and in the stands so it was nice to be involved.

“Hopefully I can go from strength to strength because that was my first game. The more and more I play the better and better I’ll become.”
