There were joyous scenes when the final whistle sounded at Adams Park on Saturday afternoon as Wanderers moved above Shrewsbury with a 1-0 win.

Fist pumps, high fives and hugs galore were the order of the day for the whole of Blues matchday squad as they celebrated on the pitch after a fine win.

Sam Wood got the hosts off to an absolute flyer as he rose to meet Nico Yennaris’ right wing cross with the perfect header that sailed past Jason Leutwiler after just 40 seconds. The winger also exemplified Wanderers’ work ethic perfectly as he charged around the pitch giving the visitors no time on the ball.

The man who provided the cross for the winning goal, Yennaris, featured in a Wycombe shirt at right-back for the first time after Sido Jombati picked up a foot injury in training. Gareth Ainsworth said he opted for the on loan Brentford man ahead of Danny Rowe because he provided a more attacking threat but he also did his defensive duties expertly in a superb display.

Fellow Bees loanee Sam Saunders had originally been left out of the starting XI for Hogan Ephraim, but when the winger pulled out in the warm-up through illness the 31-year-old stepped into deliver a classy display in central midfield. Saunders ability to retain possession and put Blues on the front foot earned him the sponsors’ man-of-the-match award.

At the back, Alfie Mawson was again a commanding figure as he kept one of the most dangerous strikers in the league, James Collins, quiet throughout the contest. Mawson won the majority of his aerial battles and was in the right place to make a number of important clearances.
