Wanderers battled back to draw against Accrington on Tuesday night as they moved back below Shrewsbury to third in League Two.

Sam Wood was on target for the second game running – again with his head – as he arrived at the perfect moment to head home Paul Hayes’ cross. As was the case on Saturday the winger was a bright spark throughout and came close to grabbing his second with a fierce half-volley.

As Wanderers toiled in the second half they needed a spark. It eventually came in the form of Alfie Mawson who got forward and his determination was rewarded as his shot took a fortunate deflection which diverted it past Scott Davies.

With more than a few tired legs on display Sam Saunders did his best to provide some energy and impetus into Blues’ play. The midfielder also came agonisingly close to opening his account for Wanderers when his curling free-kick struck the inside of the post.

Up front Hayes did his upmost to create the chances that would win the game for Wanderers with his neat exchanges with team mates. The captain also came close in the first half with a fierce drive which flew narrowly over the crossbar.
