Fan's View blogger Will Vince feels recent criticism of Marcus Bean from a section of supporters is unwarranted...

After a terrific victory at Luton Town last night Wycombe fans are now breathing a sigh of relief after extending their lead over Bury to four points.

It now looks as if the fight for the two remaining automatic positions will be between Wycombe, Shrewsbury and Bury with Burton having surely set themselves up to secure an automatic place.

If Southend are to rescue any hopes of an automatic slot then they are almost certainly going to have to come away from Bury’s JD Stadium with maximum points at the weekend.

Bury’s run of seven wins in eight has taken a lot of people by surprise as for large parts of the season they have languished in the lower echelons of the top half of the table.

While their squad boasts a lot of quality you could argue that they may have peaked too soon and with a much tougher run in than Wycombe on paper, they are going to be hard pressed to repeat anything like their recent form in their remaining fixtures.

Wycombe on the other hand have only Burton Albion and Exeter City to play out of the teams in the top 10. Bury still have to host Southend and Shrewsbury while trips to Newport, Portsmouth and a fixture at relegation threatened Tranmere Rovers shouldn’t prove easy for the Shakers.

Last week I spoke about the performances of Brentford loanees Nico Yennaris and Sam Saunders and how important it could be to extend their deals until the end of the season.

Once again Gareth Ainsworth obliged and the duo should see out the season with the Wanderers, I say should as there are 24 hour recalls in place but hopefully Brentford won’t require their services.

Having switched to a more central role in the last three matches I think the Blues have benefited massively from the performances of Saunders in particular.

His intelligence and use of the ball is head and shoulders above what you would expect to find in League Two and he quite rightly deserved his man of the match award last night.

To my frustration Marcus Bean has copped a lot of flack recently, in my opinion it’s completely undeserved and I think he has been quite brilliant in his holding midfield role.

That position is always going to be an un-spectacular dog’s job and those ill informed will never take note of the crucial tackles and interceptions and small bits and pieces that are so important in tight games.

For a player like Sam Saunders to be able to flourish it’s paramount that someone does the job that Bean is currently doing. He’s not in the team to spread raking 45 yard passes or thread balls through the eye of the needle, he’s doing exactly what his manager wants from him.

Wycombe are well placed and need to keep doing what’s working for them, hopefully this season won’t hold any unwanted twists and turns in what is set to be a dramatic conclusion.
