After Joe Jacobson was taken off injured against Cheltenham in the first half of Saturday’s League Two clash Sam Wood filled in at left-back – a position he will happy to deputise in to help the team if needed.

Wood started the game as part of a midfield three before dropping into the back four when a bone shuddering collision between Jacobson and Jordan Wynter forced both players to be substituted.

With Sido Jombati likely to be sidelined for the rest of the season Wood is the most likely option to occupy the left-back berth should Jacobson not recover in time to face Exeter on Tuesday night.

“I started my career as a left-back and I played there most of last year. If the gaffer needs me to do a job for the team that’s what I’m going to do,” said Wood.

“I’ll do everything I can for the team to help us get over the finishing line. If I have to fill in, I’ll fill in and give everything I can like I do every game.”

The 28-year-old dismissed fears that Wanderers’ small squad could impact upon their chances of gaining automatic promotion and instead insisted they have enough to get over the line.

He said: “We’ve got a decent bench so we’re not too worried about that. We have got a small squad but we’ve got a good bench who can play in different positions, which always helps.

“We’re not too worried about that (a small squad) and hopefully JJ’s ok and he can slot back to left-back. We’ll see how it goes, stay strong, we’re a tight knit squad and we’re going to remain like that.”

Wood also stated that picking up the three points was the only important aspect of Saturday’s clash against the Robins which he labelled as “scrappy”.

The victory came via goals from defenders Aaron Pierre and Alfie Mawson and Wood was delighted to see them both chalk up their fifth goals of the season – even if it means he’ll never hear the end of it at training.

“They’re always having banter at the training ground about who can score the most and it’s good to have,” said Wood.

“They’re giving it a good go and it’s helping the team, so I don’t mind at all and they can carry on if they want to!

“They’re two very good players. They’re young and they’ve got lots to learn but they’re doing really well for us and hopefully they can keep it up. We probably won’t here the last of their little battle but it’s great to have around and it keeps on going.”

Wood wouldn’t be drawn on the prospect of automatic promotion but insisted it’s still their main aim despite having guaranteed their place in the play-offs with three points against the Robins.

He said: “There’s still a long way to go, especially with Bury and Southend who have the game in hand on us. We’ve got the points on the board at the moment and that’s the main thing.

“They’ve still got to play each other and only one of them can pick up points. If they get a draw it’s ideal.

“Only one of them can try and catch us if we keep doing our jobs. It’s in our hands so as long as we win all our games we’ll be fine.”
