Wanderers' never say die attitude came to the fore on Tuesday night as Paul Hayes scored the latest goal in the Football League this season to earn them a 2-1 victory against Exeter.

The striker seemed to have had ice flowing through his veins when, in the 12th minute of added time, he calmly stepped up to dispatch yet another penalty. Earlier in the game Hayes’ ability to hold up the ball and play in tight spaces marked him out as one of Wanderers’ main threats as he toiled up top with four different players in the first half.

Sam Saunders took home a bottle of champagne after being named as the sponsors’ man-of-the-match and the accolade was fully justified by his performance. The midfielder scored a superb opener before coming close to adding to his tally with a number of efforts.

Nico Yennaris required treatment in stoppage time after yet another last ditch tackle to deny Exeter. The right-back is a big threat going forward but his defensive qualities were on display for all to see as he nicked the ball off Liam Sercombe as the winger was about to shoot when through on goal.

How Matt Ingram managed to keep out Tom Nichols’ header in the 92nd minute is anyone’s guess. The ‘keeper showed lightning fast reflexes to block the midfielder what looked to be a winner for Exeter.
