Wanderers will once again head into the final day of the season with their destiny dependent on results elsewhere after defeat to Morecambe at Adams Park on Saturday.

The Chairboys were in the driving seat before the start of play but now require favours from elsewhere if they are to seal automatic promotion.

On Saturday things might have been different had Alfie Mawson’s header been two inches lower and found the net instead of thudding against the crossbar. The defender, who was nominated for the League Two Player of the Year award, was once again a strong presence in the back four.

In the absence of Aaron Pierre, Nico Yennaris filled in at centre-back and the on loan Brentford man looked assured as ever. Gareth Ainsworth said after that he’s the sort of player you could play anywhere, and he certainly didn’t look out of place on Saturday.

The decisive goal arrived with four minutes left but the Shrimps would have broken Wycombe’s resistance long before that had it not been for the heroics of Matt Ingram. The ‘keeper made a number of super stops to thwart Jim Bentley’s side throughout the contest.

Up top the home side looked short of ideas but it wasn’t for the want of trying from Steven Craig. The striker made the most of his third consecutive start with an industrious display which might have seen him awarded a penalty when Andreas Arestidou wrestled him to the floor in the box.
