Aaron Pierre says that knowing he will end his first season as a Wycombe Wanderers player by taking to the turf at Wembley is an “unbelievable feeling”.

Stepping out under the arch will be justification of the 22-year-old’s decision to turn down a new contract at Championship side Brentford in the summer in order to pen a three-year deal with Blues.

The burly defender has since gone on to form a formidable partnership with close friend Alfie Mawson in the heart of Wanderers’ defence and another strong showing helped secure a place in the play-off final.

“We’ve got a lot of youngsters and we play them a lot, so it’s even more special that us youngsters are getting noticed in League Two,” Pierre said.

“It just shows that if you give us a chance that we’ll rise to the occasion when it’s needed and that’s what we’ve shown over the season.

“It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get automatic promotion but we’re in the play-off final now so we have a second chance now. Everything happens for a reason and maybe this is our chance to get into League One.”

When Wanderers travel to the capital on May 23 it will be their first trip to the new Wembley and first visit to the stadium since they won the Division Three play-off final in 1994.

The Chairboys secured a shot at making it to League One after overcoming the disappointment of missing out on a top three spot to see off Plymouth over two legs.

Pierre said: “We only had a goal advantage and that can change very quickly, so we needed to make sure that we started sharply.

“We got our first goal and ever since then we didn’t look back. They had their little spells where they scored – I don’t know if he was offside or not but apparently he was.

“Referees make decision like that but at the end of the day we won both legs, we’re going to Wembley and that’s all that matters.”

Pierre, who’s made 48 appearances this season, was keen to enjoy the moment but said he has his eyes firmly set on taking Wanderers up a division when they walk out at Wembley to play Southend.

“It’s every kid’s dream to go to Wembley, play and represent your team and your country,” he said.

“The fact that we’re doing it, considering we nearly went out of the league last season, it just makes it even more special for us and the fans. Hopefully they’ll see us in League One.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. This is my first season here and we’ve had a massive turnaround from last season to be in the play-off final at Wembley.”
