Gareth Ainsworth has issued a rallying cry to Wanderers fans as excitement for Saturday’s League Two play-off final reaches fever pitch.

Wycombe fans are set to travel in their numbers to the national stadium for a chance to see their team at Wembley for the first time since 1994.

Southend are all that stands between the Chairboys and a place in League One but Ainsworth believes those who occupy Wanderers’ half of the famous venue will have plenty to be cheerful about whatever the outcome.

“I could probably do my post-match here for Wembley,” said Ainsworth.

“I’m optimistic for Wycombe Wanderers going forward and thankful to all who’ve helped me from Andrew Howard at the top right the way down.

“If you’re a Wycombe fan, sit down, have a think and smile because Wycombe Wanderers have done really well this season, more than anyone could have imagined.

“So if you’re a Wycombe fan, whatever the score on Saturday, sit down – out of breath hopefully from all your shouting – but just be content that we’ve had one hell of a ride this year.”

The emotions of this season have been in sharp contrast to the miserable, unhappy and dismal campaign of the year before, and the events of last season were a driving force for changes which have seen Wycombe rise up the table.

After narrowly missing out on automatic promotion, Blues have earned a second crack at making it to League One – a position no one expected them to be in – and the Wycombe manager is eyeing one final flourish for the fans.

“I thank every one of you from the bottom of my heart,” he said.

“Your support has been fantastic, I’d love to give you one more thing to cheer about and we’ll be doing everything we can to make that happen.”
