Matt Ingram has a chance of donning the gloves for Wanderers at Wembley, according to manager Gareth Ainsworth.

The 21-year-old was in the stands at Adams Park for the play-off semi-final second leg against Plymouth and he watched on as his replacement Alex Lynch produced a string of saves to preserve Blues’ lead.

Ingram missed both legs of the semi-final after coming off with 15 minutes left in the final regular season game of the season against Northampton on May 2 after a collision with Sam Wood, injuring his knee in the process. “Matt’s near. I don’t know how near but he’s near,” said Ainsworth.

“He had a huge smile on his face after the second leg of the play-off final, so I think that says everything about his chances.

“He was grinning like a Cheshire cat. I’m not going to say too much more about that one but he’ll be very close to playing.”

Stand-in stopper Lynch made his professional debut against the Cobblers before helping Blues through to the play-off final where he will be in line to start again if Ingram does not recover in time.

Lynch’s display in the second leg has gone a long way to diminishing Wycombe fans’ fears about the suitability of the rookie ‘keeper to play in games of this magnitude, and Ainsworth says he will have no problems in putting him in goal again.

He said: “We put Lynchy in, the first game he needed at Plymouth and in the second game he excelled.

“I thought he made some fantastic saves but he’s still got a lot to learn and he’s in great hands with Barry Richardson.

“We don’t just sign ‘keepers to train every day. If they’re called upon they’re needed and Alex was called upon, needed and stood up to the test, so I have no worries about sticking Alex Lynch in again.”
