Steven Craig is “raring to go” after declaring himself fit for the League Two play-off final on Saturday.

The striker scored in the first leg victory against Plymouth in the semi-final before watching the second leg from the stands after a hamstring injury ruled him out.

Gareth Ainsworth called the Scotsman’s decision to take himself out of running to play at Adams Park “incredibly unselfish” and Craig revealed why it was a decision he had to make.

“The older you get, the more experienced you get and you’ve got to realise that if you’re not 100 per cent you’re not just doing yourself an injustice it’s your team mates as well,” he said.

“I did a fitness test on the afternoon before the game, I didn’t feel comfortable and I didn’t want to let the boys down, let the gaffer down and, most of all, let myself down.

“It was such a big occasion, so it was a tough decision but it proved the right one in the end.”

The 34-year-old has been training this week and said that if the second leg clash had fell two days later he would have been fit to start.

Craig was joined in the stands by ‘keeper Matt Ingram, who Ainsworth says has a chance of playing at Wembley, and he admitted that it wasn’t a game he enjoyed watching.

The striker said: “It was easier because we won but before the game I wasn’t looking forward to it because you have no control over the game.

“I hate watching my own team, but it was good to watch on Thursday because I thought the boys were excellent, especially in the first half.”

Wycombe’s dominant victory against the Pilgrims gave them another crack at promotion to League One, having missed out by just one point on automatic promotion, and Craig feels the semi-final win means Blues head to the capital on a high.

“We’ve just got that ‘no fear’ mentality, we never know when we’re beat and I think 5-3 flattered Plymouth,” he said.

“There was only ever one team that was going to win it, in both legs. That was proved for 50-60 minutes last Thursday and we were by far the better team.

“It was good and we can take that confidence on to Saturday.”
