Gareth Ainsworth hopes his team will be on song when they walk out for the League Two play-off final at Wembley tomorrow – a venue where he has only ever been to see a concert.

The Wanderers manager has taken in games at the old Wembley but says his first sighting of the pitch at the national stadium, which was reopened in 2007, will be when the team arrive at the ground on Saturday.

Far from being football related, Ainsworth’s only previous experience of being under the arch was to see a certain team of musicians from Manchester.

“I’ve been as a fan a couple of times, I’ve been to an Oasis concert there, I watched Blackburn Rovers win the play-off final to get promoted to the Premier League there and I played for Preston North End in a 4-2 defeat,” he said.

“They were all at the old Wembley, the twin towers, apart from the Oasis concert – that’s the first time I’ve been to the new Wembley.

“I haven’t actually seen the pitch at Wembley as a fan so my first sight of the pitch will be when we get there on Saturday. It will be an amazing thing to be able to do.”

When Wycombe take to the hallowed turf they will be playing Southend for the right to take the final place in League One.

The sides finished level on 84 points and, although Blues beat the Shrimpers 4-1 at Adams Park and earned a 2-2 draw at Roots Hall, Ainsworth feels it will be a hotly contested match.

He said: “Phil Brown’s a good manager, he’s managed in the Premier League and you don’t get to do that if you’re not a good manager, so Phil will be tough opposition.

“We’ve stood up to more physical challenges this season. They can play, they’ve got good wide men – we’ve got all this in mind but I’m sure they’ve looked at us and thought the same.

“It’s one of those where league form goes out of the window. We entered this mini tournament called the play-offs two weeks ago and we’ve managed to get to the final.

“Over 46 games we deserved to be where we were, you can’t grumble after 46 games because things even themselves out.

“Fourth was our rightful position and Southend were level on points with us which goes to say that we’re in for a good game on Saturday.”
