Wanderers' hopes of seeing Alfie Mawson in the light and dark blue quarters next season are over after the defender opted to join Barnsley.

Manager Gareth Ainsworth admitted last week it would be the "deal of the century" if he managed to persuade the 21-year-old, who won the Players' Player and Fans' Player of the year awards last season, to sign permanently at Adams Park.

Tykes boss Lee Johnson fended off competition from a host of clubs in League One and Two for the former Brentford player, who has signed a three-year deal at Oakwell.

Due to his age, Barnsley will have to agree a compensation package with the Bees - something which they have not yet managed, according to the club website.

Upon signing on Tuesday, Mawson said: “I’m really pleased to get this sorted and can’t wait to get going.

"I was lucky to have lots of interest from elsewhere and even the Championship but once I met Lee Johnson here at Oakwell my mind was made up quickly.”
