WANDERERS boss Gareth Ainsworth says tomorrow night’s Capital One Cup clash at home to Fulham is a massive opportunity to build a better future for his club.

He cited the example of Cambridge United in the FA Cup last year, recalling how they earned a plum tie against Manchester United and then used the receipts from their two ties against them to invest in new players which are expected to turn them into serious promotion contenders this season.

Ainsworth said: “Cups are important to me because I’m a traditionalist. I’m an ex-player who loved the cups and a cup run is fantastic for any team. Cambridge United have built their whole season on their cup run from last year. They have invested heavily from that, so cup runs aren’t a bad thing, they create finances. We will get one or two injuries but we’ve had that before.”

The Blues boss refused to divulge any team news ahead of the visit of the Championship outfit but it is likely that there will be one or two changes from the team that started the season so well with a 3-0 win over York City at Adams Park on Saturday.

Ainsworth said after that game: “There’s a couple of knocks out there. We will assess everyone and see where we are. With a small squad fitness is key and rotation will come into it but squad rotation is difficult without a big squad.”

Wanderers will hope to have Matt Bloomfield back in contention tomorrow after he pulled out of Saturday’s squad through illness. But midfielder Max Kretzschmar looks set to be ruled out. He arrived at Adams Park on Saturday wearing a protective boot, which the club say is just precaution, after turning his ankle in training on Friday.
