BLUES boss Gareth Ainsworth was indebted to two moments of quality as Wanderers went top of the league after two matches with a 2-0 victory at Barnet.

They spent 97 minutes fighting fire with fire and matching Barnet for their brawn and muscle but bagged the points with two moments of brilliance.

Garry Thompson provided the first with his first goal for the club, a 50th minute left footed effort that bent its way in off the post, before keeper Matt Ingram produced an unbelievable save to keep out Michael Gash’s overhead kick at the other end.

Ainsworth said: “It was two moments of real quality. Thompson showed exactly why I signed him and Matt Ingram proved what I have been saying that he’s the best keeper in League Two by a long way. To pull a save off like that from an overhead kick when you can’t see what’s coming is just a measure of Matt’s ability. He’s a fantastic keeper and we are just so lucky to have someone like that between the sticks.

“But he will be the first to say he had a great back four in front of him who defended really well.

“We had to deal with a lot thrown at us today. Losing Anthony Stewart in midweek and then losing his replacement Danny Rowe in the game today we are really stretched to the limit but I am really proud of everyone.”

And he was delighted to see his summer signing Thompson open his account with a double.

Ainsworth said: "Garry Thompson’s workrate was phenomenal and he deserved both goals. The first one was a fantastic strike. It is a Goal of the Season contender already for me and nothing more than he dessrved. He led the line really well and he is going to worry defences at this level and that’s why he’s here. But we are not a one man show. The way we defended and stuck to our plan was also excellent. We handled everything Barnet chucked at us.”

As Wycombe survived the Barnet barrage, Thompson then showed his cool to kill off the hosts with a cool-as-you-like injury time penalty to snuff out Barnet’s hopes of a comeback.

Ainsworth said: “We are joint top with a few others but it doesn’t mean a thing at this stage of the season. It’s nice to be up there but even the bottom team won’t be panicking yet because there’s still plenty of football to come.”
