Gareth Ainsworth has warned his players of complacency ahead of their Fa Cup first round match against Halifax Town at the Shay on Sunday.

The Blues head into the game against their non-league opponents on the back of a 2-0 win against Mansfield.

While Wycombe may enjoy a perceived dominance over their non-league opponents Ainsworth knows from personal experience that they will have to play well to avoid an upset.

“We would like to keep going in the cup and know that Halifax are going to be right up for the game and that we will have to play well to progress,” he explained.

“I have been on the wrong end of a defeat against non-league opposition in this competition and it is something that you don’t want to experience.

“It was a long time ago, Preston against Kidderminster Harriers, and we could have had a big draw in the next round which is something every player wants and I still remember missing out on it.”

The performance against Mansfield pleased Ainsworth and he felt his team were duly rewarded for their efforts.

He has spoken of his happiness with performances even when results have not been going in the Chairboys favour but accepted the mood ahead of the Halifax game was better for Saturday’s win.

“It has been a good week for us and like I keep saying I have been happy with the performances and we have played well in some games but not won,” Ainsworth added.

“We have still been creating chances and on Saturday we put them away and I think it was a solid performance which we would like to build on against Halifax.”

Town have conceded 47 goals in the league this season but won 2-1 in extra time against fellow Conference side Guiseley last month to book their place in the second round.

Their record in front of goal won’t strike fear into the Adams Park faithful as only five players have found the net with Jordan Burrow’s 11 goals counting for 55% of their total output this campaign.

Halifax’s recent form has continued to be poor but they did win 2-0 against Farsley Celtic in the West Riding County Cup on Tuesday.

Ainsworth feels league form ‘goes out the window’ in the FA Cup and is wary that a Halifax Town side who sit bottom of the Conference Premier will be desperate to continue in the cup.

Paul Hayes limped off at the end of the win against Mansfield and though he has trained this week his fitness will be assessed closer to Sunday with Ainsworth keen to protect his captain.

With Wanderers’ match against Notts County being postponed and the club having no other new injury worries Ainsworth can choose a strong squad in a competition he wants to do well in.

He said: “I would love to take this club on a cup run but there is no pressure on us to keep going in the cup.

“We are going to take the competition seriously and anything we can get out of it would be a fantastic bonus for this club.”

Should Wycombe win the match they will be just one victory away from a potentially lucrative tie against Premier League opposition in the third round.
