Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Matt Bloomfield is prepared to wait for a starting spot after receiving limited game time this season.

Bloomfield, who has been used sparingly this campaign, has made just six appearances in League Two and has often had to make do with a place on the bench.

The 31-year-old is happy to work hard to impress manager Gareth Ainsworth both in training and when he is given a chance in the Wanderers side to force his way into the starting XI.

“It is the gaffer’s choice if I play or not and I respect that. I have not played as much as I would have liked at this stage of the season but it is up to me to come in and make an impression,” he said.

“I did that on Saturday with an assist for the second goal and I need to keep doing that to give the manager a decision to make on whether I play.

“It is important for me to train well and make sure that when I am picked I am in the best possible shape and that I am ready to play well.”

After his impressive cameo appearance against Mansfield he may be handed another chance to showcase his qualities this weekend when Wycombe travel to Halifax Town for the FA Cup first round.

While the club want to continue in the FA Cup the demands of operating on a squad of less than 25 players may mean manager Gareth Ainsworth opts to rotate his usual line-up.

It is a competition that Bloomfield holds in the highest regard and playing in the tournament, like many football fans around the country, was something he aspired to as a child.

He has of course fulfilled that goal already but still gets caught up in the romance of the world’s oldest knockout club competition.

When asked of his fondest FA Cup memories Bloomfield said: “I’ve never really had an extended cup run and it is something that you dream about.

“It is a competition you watch as a kid and I remember watching the games at the old Wembley and always wanting to play in the FA Cup.

“It is the biggest and most well-known knockout cup competition in the world so it is a competition you always want to do well in.”

This weekend could help fulfil dual ambitions for Bloomfield, firstly in his short term goal of returning to first team action and perhaps more importantly the more long term desire to prosper in the FA Cup.
