Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth says Friday night’s friendly match against Leeds United is an indication of how much the club have grown.

Wycombe have arranged the game at Adams Park to fill the gap left by the postponement of their League Two clash against Notts County.

Ainsworth feels that the game will not only be a spectacle for the fans but also that attracting a club of Leeds’ size goes some way towards emphasising how far the club has progressed in recent years.

“The fact that we have been able to get a club like Leeds United to play us shows just how far the club have moved forward and it should be a fantastic game for the fans,” he said.

“I can’t thank Leeds, the board and Steve Evans enough for agreeing to come down here. We wanted a game as soon as the Notts County game was called off and we identified the problem and are pleased to be playing.”

Both Ainsworth and Evans will be attempting to maintain the momentum that has been established by two wins in a row respectively over the course of the international break.

Evans, who has only been in the job since 19 October, has seen his side win their last two games and has only lost one of his five games after Leeds had won just twice in the league before his arrival.

Ainsworth recalls the manner in which his side returned from their last enforced break where they lost against Stevenage and Newport County in the space of a week and wants to avoid a repeat.

He said: “We came back after the last break and didn’t perform well so we wanted to keep that competitive edge and to keep players up to match speed this time around.”

Leeds will be bringing their strongest available squad to play and Ainsworth will have little choice but to follow suit.

Wycombe will largely field a first 11 – due in part to the small size of their squad – but Ainsworth has also suggested that the game could represent a chance for those on the periphery of the first 11 to impress.

“Of course it is a chance to show what you can do, but so is every game we play and every training session,” Ainsworth explained.

“Everyone in the squad has played League Two football this season and whichever players go out there will be ready to keep their level high and keep in my thoughts for my starting selection.”
