Gareth Ainsworth was pleased with the 1-0 win over Yeovil despite feeling his side could have won more easily.

The victory came courtesy of a fabulous curling strike from the edge of the box by Luke O’Nien in the 70th minute.

Ainsworth felt the performance, while not always inspiring, was deserving of the three points and he was satisfied to be heading home with the victory.

“Three points away from home on a Tuesday night is three points away from home on a Tuesday night and I’ll take that any day,” he said.

“We made hard work of it. I thought we dominated the first half and had a lot of chances and one on ones. When you don’t put them away you start to think it is not going to be your day.

“It took a piece of magic from Luke O’Nien to win the game and we were a bit nervy in closing the game out.”

Wanderers were the better of the two sides and played with an attacking verve that was not quite so clear during Saturday’s draw with Wimbledon.

The low score owed much to the keeping of Town’s Chris Weale who denied the Blues on multiple occasions.

Ainsworth though felt the game was typical of a trip to a team near the bottom of the table, and that once his team adapted to the challenge facing them they were the better side.

He said: “We came here off the back of Saturday where we were really up and at them and didn’t give Wimbledon a moment and today was a different game.

“Yeovil dropped deep and that is expected of a team that is struggling because they are cautious of conceding.

“It took us about 10 minutes to get the message out there that the space was in front of the Yeovil team instead of behind and we had to keep the ball.”

Wycombe’s dominance was less apparent in the second half as Yeovil sat deeper and deeper.

The energy of O’Nien in midfield was constant though and the manner in which he took his goal was indicative of the increasing confidence he has in his ability.

Ainsworth will now hope his side can continue a run that extended to five games unbeaten against Portsmouth on Saturday.
