Blues manager Gareth Ainsworth says he is keen to avoid an extended hangover from his side’s FA Cup run when they take on Plymouth Argyle tomorrow.

Wanderers were in grim form last time out as they lost 2-0 against Leyton orient just four days after they had been dumped out of the FA Cup by Aston Villa.

Ainsworth knows that his side must lift themselves considerably if they are to take anything form Argyle, and is also aware of the history of teams faltering in the wake of cup runs coming to an end.

“What you can’t let happen after a cup run is let it give you a hangover. I think Cambridge United had one after they played Man United last year,” Ainsworth said.

“It took them a little while to get over it and I don’t want to be the team that does that this year. I will be waiting for someone to take the bull by the horns and make something happen for us.”

A run of just two defeats in their last 10 games has seen Plymouth cement their place in the top two and they are just two points behind League Two leaders Northampton.

They head into the match on the back of a 1-1 draw with fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol Rovers and will take extra confidence from the 2-1 win they recorded at Adams Park earlier this season.

The draw against Rovers did however see the Pilgrims fall from the top of the table.

Wycombe’s form could not be more contrasting to that of Plymouth's and they will be looking to end a run of three league defeats in a row.

Ainsworth therefore knows that Home Park will be no easy hunting ground for the Chairboys ahead of a run of fixtures including three members of the top six in their next six games.

“I have looked at the fixtures we have coming up and there is some real tough games. We are going to be on a tough run of opposition and we are going to have to be on it,” said Ainsworth.

“On our day we can match anyone but it is tough. Like I say we will be working hard to try and turn things around and get back to winning.”

Matt Bloomfield could be in contention for a return for Wycombe after sitting out Saturday’s defeat with a dead leg.

Paul Hayes is a doubt with a knee problem, but Ainsworth suggested he is hoping one of his backup forwards will take the chance to impress should Hayes’ complaint rule him out.

Ainsworth said: “We will assess him (Hayes) because he is a big player for us. If Paul is not fit the person who comes in has to prove they are worth their weight by sticking the ball in the goal.”

Plymouth could give a debut to Daniel Nardiello after the sticker arrived on loan from Bury. The 33-year-old scored 14 goals last season as Bury secured promotion to League One.

A win could see Wanderers finish the day as high as sixth, depending on results elsewhere, while defeat could see them slip to as low as 12th.
