Gareth Ainsworth is keen to stress quality over quantity when it comes to Wycombe Wanderers’ summer recruitment.

A small squad has begun to catch up with the Chairboys in recent weeks as a spate of injuries has left them with limited resources.

Despite acknowledging a bigger squad would help his side’s cause next season, Ainsworth feels that budget constraints mean Wycombe must be careful when bringing signings in.

“I don’t think it is possible [to increase the size of the squad] with the finances we have. There has been talk of trying to build the squad and start a development squad,” Ainsworth explained.

“We are really trying but you wouldn’t believe the money involved and what it takes. If I wanted to have a bigger squad I would probably have to make sacrifices and go with untried, untested players.

“I think the fans would rather see a proven goalscorer, who is in form and has experience of playing in League Two come in.”

While Ainsworth is clear in his targets for the transfer window, he understands bringing in players will always be a highly fluid situation.

It is a situation which is complicated further by the limited funds available to the Wycombe boss which often leaves him fighting a losing battle to attract players.

Ainsworth said: “If we can’t get the players we want in we will have to take chances and we always seem to be bottom of the pile when we are looking for players.

“Five clubs will go for a player and we can offer them the least money wise, so we have to sell the club and the potential we offer to advance people’s careers when we go for players.

“It is tough but we will do our absolute best to bring in the right personnel for next season.”

Ainsworth will also face a battle to hold onto players as clubs look to poach Wycombe’s top performers to bolster their ranks.

He is aware of the challenge and is keen to hold onto a group of players he feels have embraced his coaching techniques and have become a strong unit.

He said: “I am pretty sure we have a lot of the right personnel here already, with the way we defend and set-up.”
