Wycombe Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth has bemoaned a second half ‘capitulation’ which saw his side lose 3-0 against Oxford United.

The Chairboys arrived at the Kassam Satrdium knowing a win could prevent their local rivals from gaining automatic promotion from League Two.

However, Ainsworth’s men never looked like causing an upset and second half goals from Chey Dunkley, Chris Maguire and Callum O'Dowda sealed Wycombe’s demise and left the Blues boss frustrated.

“We capitulated in the second half and I think the first goal is too soft, we don’t seem to score goals as easy as that from set plays,” he said.

“The second goal, the referee has given them a lift up [by awarding a penalty], but there is no blaming him, and the third goal is poor again.

“I am just sorry to the fans who came up and wanted an upset, we should have been better than that.”

On a day where Wanderers were underdogs they rarely looked like scoring and the defeat stretches their winless run to eight games.

Oxford had spent much of the first half peppering the Wycombe goal with shots and but for some wayward finishing would have been home and dry by half-time.

As it was they had to wait until beyond the interval to make their dominance tell. The nature of both the defeat and performance had clearly hurt Ainsworth and he made no attempt to conceal his emotions after the full-time whistle.

“We haven’t been beaten 3-0 in a long time, I can’t remember the last time, so that really hurts me,” he said.

“I know it hurts the fans and I am going to make sure it hurts the players because that wasn’t good enough.

“Oxford’s resources are much bigger than ours, but when it comes down to it it’s 11 against 11. We matched Aston Villa at home and they have better players than Oxford.

“I was disappointed today that we didn’t match them for the last 30 minutes because for the first 60, until they scored, I thought it could have gone either way and Oxford were getting quite nervous.”
