Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth says the club is making good progress in the transfer market despite the lack of new arrivals.

The Chairboys manager is hoping to finalise some transfers before pre-season commences and is working on bringing in characters who suit the Wycombe model.

Ainsworth remains confident he will be able to recruit players but concedes the challenge of competing in the transfer market with a limited budget is proving to be testing.

He said: “Our recruitment plans started months ago – well before the end of last season – as we wanted to give ourselves the best chance of bringing in the right players, both in terms of ability and character.

“We identified a few key targets but have found ourselves massively out-bid by clubs in our own division.

“Players that we have wanted have moved elsewhere on much higher wages than we could afford to offer without breaking the bank and risking the financial stability of the club.

“But with every setback we just move on and explore other possibilities and there could be some good news just around the corner.”

While Ainsworth’s efforts to sign players have so far gone unrewarded, he believes he will have a strong squad by the start of the 2016/17 campaign.

He insists that finding a middle ground where all parties can be satisfied with any prospective deal is essential, and says the club will not be rushed into conducting their business.

“I have every confidence that we’ll start the season with a squad which is capable of improving on how we finished last year,” Ainsworth said.

“There are hundreds of players out of contract and without a club, and it’s a case of striking the right balance between their expectations and what we are able to offer.

He added: “We won’t rush our business and make a signing that we don’t feel is right for us. In the past couple of years, some of our best acquisitions have come right before the start of the season, or even once the season has begun.

“Believe me, we are working day and night to strengthen the squad in the right areas.”
