Luke O’Nien scored twice as Wycombe Wanderers came from behind to beat Maidenhead United 4-1 in a pre-season friendly at York Road.

The hosts went ahead through Dave Tarpey before Garry Thompson levelled and O’Nien grabbed his brace to make it 3-1.

Sam Wood rounded off the scoring with a superb strike from distance as Wanderers concluded their pre-season campaign with a win.

They will now look ahead to their League Two opener away from home against Crawley Town next Saturday.

There was still no place in the squad for Paul Hayes, Paris Cowan-Hall or Aaron Pierre and the trio face a rush to be fit for the season opener against Crawley.

Barry Richardson was named on the bench and Gareth Ainsworth appears to have settled on the 46-year-old as his number two for the season.

The Blues continued with the 4-3-3 formation which brought an improved performance late on in the 2-1 defeat to Aldershot on Tuesday.

An even start saw Wanderers carve out the first chance through Garry Thompson as he glanced a header just wide from eight yards.

Myles Weston has already established himself as a dangerous crosser in his short time at the club and it was from his whipped delivery which Thompson got free.

Wycombe were behind after 10 minutes though and the manner of the goal would have infuriated Ainsworth as Maidenhead prospered from a simple long ball.

Sean Marks got up well to flick into the path of Tarpey who unerringly smashed a left footed drive low past Scott Brown.

The hosts were having the better of the chances and Wanderers were fortunate not to be two down just before the 20 minute mark.

Again it was Tarpey who caused the problems as he cut in from the left and saw his powerful strike deflect beyond the helpless Brown and just over.

Wanderers soon made the most of the reprieve and were level in the 25th minute. Some good work from Dayle Southwell gave Danny Rowe the chance to cross from the right.

His ball broke to Thompson who reacted well to turn past Carl Pentney from close range.

The goal galvanised Wycombe and O’Nien put them ahead in fine style soon after.

The midfielder stepped onto a loose ball some 25 yards from goal and instantly struck a low drive into the bottom left corner to give Wycombe the lead at the break.

The second half started at a slow pace with Joe Jacobson’s free kick being the closest either side came to scoring in the early stages.

The mood changed just before the hour when a Jacobson sent a cross towards Adebayo Akinfenwa and the United defence failed to clear properly.

The loose ball fell invitingly to O’Nien and he dispatched a powerful volley to score his second and take the game beyond the hosts.

Wycombe added to their advantage in spectacular fashion six minutes later as Wood struck a stunning fourth.

A short free kick was tapped to the first half substitute and he sent a strike screaming into the top corner from 30 yards.

The Blues were enjoying their best spell of the game and were beginning to break through Maidenhead’s defence at will.

Their dominance created two chances for Akinfenwa, but the former AFC Wimbledon man guided his headers off target on both occasions.

Wycombe could easily have added to their lead late on, but Akinfenwa and Matt Bloomfield both missed presentable chances in the closing stages.

Wood was unlucky not to add to his tally after volleying against the bar late on.

Nonetheless Wanderers will be content with the result and a performance which saw them control proceedings from much of the match.
